Meeting eye to eye - Aysel « Thread Started on Nov 1, 2009, 1:32am »
It was early afternoon. The streets of Oxford were full of people. The market stalls and shops were crowded with shoppers going about their business. The scene never changed, it probably never would. There would always be the streets lined with stalls and glass-fronted shops, their owners calling out to whoever was listening, taking the money of those passing by in exchange for food or clothes or trinkets. There would always be the people searching for that one specific item, or searching for a good deal. There would be the disputes over prices and the satisfied or unsatisfied customers. There would always be the street urchins sneaking through the crowd, picking unprotected pockets or stealing something from the edge of a stall.
On the roof of one of the shops lay a small boy, his ruby coloured eyes surveying the activity below him. It was always the same when you looked at it and yet the details were always changing. Lucan Tennar liked watching the market stalls. There was always something interesting going on. His vantage point from the roof let him see everything without getting caught up in it. Beside him lay his Dæmon in the form of a black cat, surveying the scene just as her boy was. They were both watching the same thing; a rather large man arguing with a short butcher over the price of his meat. They were both becoming rather angry and the large man's face was turning a funny shade of purple. The dispute was settled when the butcher reached for his meat cleaver, gesturing for the other man to leave.
Children aren't known for their ability so stay in one place, and so before too long Lucan was making his way over the roof to the alley behind it. The store owner piled up empty crated by the back wall. They were like a staircase leading to the roof, as though he wanted people to get up there. The small boy dropped from the edge of the roof onto the top crate, followed closely by Daelera, his Dæmon. As they reached ground level two other young boy's aced past, looking over their shoulders fearfully. One was clutching something. They've probably been stealing, Lucan thought. He didn't recognize either of them, which was good. Most of the street kids didn't get along with him. Are we going to be stealing anything today? inquired Daelera. Lucan shrugged in response. He didn't like taking things, but if you don't have any money there's not much else you can do if you want to survive. He wanted to be able to walk up to the stall owners and but the things he needed but there was no way for him to get the money.
Even when his parents had been here they hadn't had much money. Of course, Lucan hadn't been out much then. His parents rightly guessed he would be the victim of bullying from the other kids. Lucan never really understood why they didn't like him. He wasn't even that different. Most people mus just be afraid of things that are different, he thought.

Running, Running, when was his human going to stop this incessant running! Palladium heaved a breathed as he did his best keeping up with Aysel, switching between forms as they went, from a chickadee, to a cat, then a thin brown fox, all in attempt to remain at her side. Surely she was faster then any child he had seen before, perhaps all their times escaping from danger had made this so. Hunger had lead them into the streets, but the usual law keepers were about, and having just made a dash from the orphanage, they were looking for the child amongst the trees nearby, in the marketplace, everywhere they could imagine a child may go to hide.
Why was it so important to them? Just because she didn’t have a mum or dad, adults were crawling all over themselves just to put her somewhere. Aysel was beginning to wonder if they weren’t doing this for her, but for their own self conscious. She certainly didn’t need their help. Leaving her be would have been much better. The girl had much bigger matters to deal with. In between two shops Aysel’s pace slowed, just as two boys burst into the parallel alley. Thieves, like herself. Children who couldn’t afford to pay upfront, who needed to eat just like the rest of the citizens of Oxford. That was the same wherever you went. Children were homeless, hungry, and orphanages were always full.
“Hey- Hey Aysel! There’s someone down that way, must’ve caught those boys stealing!” Palladium lifted into the air, a dainty white moth, before settling on his human’s shoulder as a ferret. He curled himself into her hair, nuzzling her cheek to reassure the child of the risk. Aysel’s heart hadn’t yet slowed down from their previous run, the beating was so fierce she worried someone else could hear it. Pressing herself up against the wall just before the corner, Aysel waited and listened. “Look around the corner Pal, tell me when they leave.” Doing just that, Palladium crawled down her person, and met the floor as a small brown mouse. He peeked around the corner, expectant to see an angry man and his daemon. Aysel, curious to see what her daemon saw, crept closer to the corner, peeking into the alley with consciously.

Lucan watched the pair of boys run onward down the alley way. He knew all too well what they were feeling right now. Heart pounding, feeling like it's going to burst out of your chest. Muscles aching from running as fast as you could ever go. And above all the fear of being caught, of what will happen if you aren't fast enough, or if you fall or take a wrong turn. Lucan had never been caught before, he had no desire to be. He didn't know what would happen if he were to be caught but he knew it would be extremely bad. The world is unforgiving and you don't often get second chances. His thoughts turned momentarily to the butcher with the cleaver. If he threatened his customers imagine what he'd do to people stealing from him.
Pulling the hood sewn to his shirt over his head, Lucan glanced back down the alley, looking for the person the boys were running from. He saw no-one. They must have either out ran him or lost him in the crowds or alley ways of Oxford. That was one advantage of the busy market days; it was easy to get lost in the crowds. You can hide amongst the shoppers, sneak off into a side road or double back on yourself. He wondered if he should call to the boys, tell them they'd lost their pursuer. But doing so could alert whoever was chasing them and they were too far away now, anyway. They probably wouldn't have stopped even if he'd told them it was OK. He knew he wouldn't. Lucan had been on the streets for long enough to know you can only trust yourself and your Dæmon. Well... there were others as well but they weren't often around. And anyway, Lucan's friends all had homes and didn't have to resort to stealing. None of them really knew what it was like for him.
Turning and starting to walk down the alley, Lucan wondered exactly how long it had been since he ran away from his carers. He Didn't know exactly how long it had been, he just knew that it had been quite a long time. Long enough for him to start to worry. His farther should have gotten back from his job weeks ago. Maybe he had. Maybe he had returned and heard that Lucan had ran away. Maybe he had thought that it was his fault his son was gone. Maybe he had stopped looking. Maybe he hadn't wanted him back. Don't think like that, Daelera said in his head. Your dad would never stop looking for you. The ship might just have taken a little longer to get back than usual. He might be back and looking for us now. He'll find us soon, I'm sure of it.
Lucan was so caught up in his thoughts that he failed to notice a girl and her Dæmon peeking round a corner just ahead. Daelera hadn't noticed either. She was concerned for her boy. He often got sad when thinking about his parents for too long. She didn't want that to happen today. As Lucan neared the corner he looked up, his mind returning to the present for just long enough to realize that someone was watching. Taking a step back in shock, he gasped. Daelera changed form, becoming a lizard, her first instinct to protect her human. After they had both taken a second to look at the girl who had been peering around the corner, boy and Dæmon both realized there was no need th be scared. It was only a child after all, she couldn't be any older than Lucan. Daelera quickly switched forms again, this time becoming a young beagle. "What are you doing?" Lucan asked the girl.

"It's a boy!" Palladium whispered obviously. "Sure looks like a boy, don't it?" Aysel smirked looking down to Palladium who gave her a sour look, "ha ha, very funny" a comment which only make Aysel snicker. "Second one we've seen all by themselves like this. This one don't look too old though." Aysel found herself stepping forward curious, but kept herself from turning the corner too soon. It was Palladium's time for cynics for he replied sullenly, "I can't see why you're surprised, didn't we just see two other boys run that way?"
Before Aysel could find words to a comeback, their presence had been discovered. Suddenly the boy's daemon took the shape of a lizard whilst the boy himself took a startled step back. Alarmed Aysel clung to the wall, Palladium shifted, becoming a ringtailed possum, his salt and pepper fur ruffled to make himself seem intimidating enough to fend off a lizard. However as the boy's daemon changed for a second time, Aysel and Palladium sensed a change and in turn relaxed.
Shaking himself he lept into the form of a pine marten and peeked his head out further. Upon hearing his question, Aysel walked into the alley cautiously. "You scared me boy! I thought- I thought you was a gobbler or somethin'! The way those other kids took off, either some angry adult was about or a gobbler... I was certain, but I come and check... to find you..." All sense of caution fell aways, curiosity bid the child forward and she obeyed it without question. "What'cha doing out all alone, boy? Don'tcha know them gobblers been snatchin' up kids left an' right?" From behind, Palladium scampered forward coiling around her legs protectively. Far be it from him to leave her unprotected, child or not, past experience stated his own self appointed duty to keep her out of trouble. Clasping her arms and jumping from one foot to another Aysel shivered, trying to let the adrenaline go. "Anyway, I'm Aysel, and this is Palladium. Pal for short... What's your name?" She didn't skip a beat, thinking it best to be more hospitable this time around, after all that was more her way any how.

The girl and her Dæmon reacted the same way Lucan had. Both were shocked by the other and both Dæmons prepared for a fight. Though the girl's Dæmon was probably only reacting to Daelera's change in form. The girl relaxed just the same as Lucan had and the possum at her feet became a pine marten. The atmosphere changed to relaxed just quickly. Lucan even felt a little silly for being startled in the first place.
It was odd that she thought he'd been a gobbler, surely she must have seen that he wasn't as soon as she'd looked round the corner. He wasn't exactly sure what gobblers looked like but he was certain they didn't look anything like him. If she'd thought he was a gobbler when she'd seem the boys run past why didn't she run too? Maybe she hadn't heard the same stories about the gobblers as he had. "I'm not a gobbler," he said, "And anyway, you can't run from gobblers. I heard they freeze you in place so you can't get away from them. I heard they're invisible too, so you don't see them. You just stop moving and then they have you." Lucan didn't really believe this story, It was just rumors passed around by the street kids, but it was the most interesting one he'd heard. No-one knew any more than they'd heard in rumors anyway so it could be true. "I'm sorry I scared you though. You scared me too for a bit."
Lucan looked at the girl as she walked closer, into the alley. She was pretty normal. Apart from her eyes. One was blue and one green. It was strangely beautiful. It took him a second to realize he was staring. He dropped his gaze, knowing what it was like to be stared at. He didn't like it so why should she be any different. In staring at her he'd been showing his own unusual eyes off. His white hair was hidden beneath his hood but his eyes and pale skin were plain to see. He instinctively tried to hide it from the world, his experience telling him that people would react negatively. Another reason was that he was easily recognizable. The hood he wore helped with that somewhat.
"I'm alone because I don't have anyone to be out with, and I'm out because I don't have anywhere to go in." he told her, simply. He knew the gobblers were about, and it scared him that he didn't have anywhere to go to get away from them if they came for him. But he was brave, and he had the knives he'd stolen, and he had Daelera. And he'd been alright so far. "I e'nt afraid of them gobbler," He lied. Everyone was afraid of them but no-one liked to admit it. Lucan was a little surprised surprised with the swiftness she introduced herself with. "My name is Lucan. My Dæmon's Daelera, but I just call her Dewy... It's shorter." Daelera was moving forward, closer to the pine marten between the girl's legs. "Are you homeless too?" she asked. Changing shape again, she became a mongoose, sitting back on her rear legs.

Hearing this boy's version of gobblers, Aysel felt a tinge of fear trickle up her spine. Nasty business gobblers, even before that suggestion came into her mind. The child wanted to go up north, but certainly not that way. As he looked at her, Aysel looked back, seemingly more astonished that any other human being had remained around her for this long. It often felt as though she stank of Gyptian, for any respectable person would move around her in an instant of seeing her. True she wasn't exactly the prettiest girl, nor did her clothes look presentable, but that didn't determine the person inside them.
'Aysel... have you ever seen someone with eyes like his? The thought was passed idly, but in turn had prompted her to look with more scrutiny upon the foreign color of the boy's eyes.
'Curious... very curious, don't you think Pal?'
Snapping to attention when she heard the boy speak again Aysel felt pangs of sympathy reach into her heart. She knew how it felt, being alone and unwanted. Not a single glance was ever passed to look upon the unfortunate children who walked the streets, not even here in Oxford. It was the same everywhere, people ignored it, out of sight out of mind. His brave reply made Aysel smile. He must've been pretty tough to stick around for so long. He probably knew this place better then she did, that's for certain.
With a name to place with his peculiar face, Aysel's smile brightened further. "Nice to meet you Lucan and Dewy." Aysel spoke quite pleasantly, clearly far more happy to have met the boy then a simple passing. Palladium, watching Daelera with inquisitive interest slowly crept from around his girl's legs and toward the other daemon. Suprised to hear another daemon speak, yet thoroughly pleased as well, Palladium's figure bristled and shrunk somewhat, taking on instead the form of a snowy white squirrel.
"Indeed we are, been on the run since six, this girl has." Palladium remained with his gaze upon the she-daemon, he had never really had much interaction with other daemons before, those that he had, were far off in the memory of a seaport town and an innkeeper's house. Blushing suddenly Aysel looked down to her daemon, once again he was too honest. "Well.... homeless for the moment.... we got a family... up north somewhere." Trying to suppress her embarrassment as well as her shame Aysel lowered her head. It was awful knowing that no one would claim you as their own, and surely this boy would understand that, yet she couldn't shake the feeling of shame.

Lucan was always a little nervous when meeting new people. He was one of those people that care deeply about what people thought about him, even if he tried not to show it. He didn't like being the one the others pick on, but there was nothing he could do about it. He was almost scared to try and make new friends for fear of being rejected. Some people would think him a loner but really he was just avoiding situations he thought would end badly. He was slowly realizing that not all people were like the street kids, though.
Lucan found himself returning the girl's smile. She seemed a really nice and cheerful person, and appeared to be genuinely pleased to have met him. "It's nice to meet you too," he replied. He rarely had proper greetings like this. He wondered if he should try to have them more often. It was nice to just introduce yourself and say 'nice to meet you' and maybe even have a conversation. Most people took that for granted. "What are you doing here?" the boy asked. He said it in a way that showed he was curious, not accusing her of anything. Direct phrases like that were easier to misinterpret. It seemed to be a good place to start a conversation.
Daelera was glad that her human had met someone in the same situation they were. It wasn't really a nice thing on the surface but for Lucan it meant having someone to share things with on equal terms. Someone who understood. But they had been homeless a lot longer than Lucan and herself had. They had been without a home for several months, this girl must have been without one for several years. "That's an awfully long time. How have you managed?" she asked. She was reflecting Lucan's inquisitive nature, wanting to find out more. At heart Lucan and Daelera were really social, which meant they would both press a conversation if they found the person nice and easy to talk to.
Lucan's interest was captured when Aysel told them she had family up north. "Up North? Really?" he asked, meeting her gaze with his own yet again. His eyes showed his interest. "What's it like there? I heard stories about it, it's meant to be great. My Dad sometimes goes to the North, He works on this ship..." He broke off mid way through his next sentence. He thought about his father again. He was really late. What if he really was... [i]Don't think like that. He'll find us.[i] Daelera was quick to remind him yet again

It took a while for Aysel to come up with a reply to his question. ’What are we doing here Pal? In all honesty, she wasn’t entirely sure, perhaps it was the hope of finding food, or it could have been the fact that people were after her. But she wasn’t going to mention that. It would make her seem a criminal. Palladium mused quietly, swishing his tail coyly in the form of a slim black cat. ’Of course we’re criminals, Aysel. What else would you call thieves?’ Displeased with the response, Aysel grasped at straws, attempting to find something safe to say. ”Oh, we’re just hanging about, not much else we can do now.” She did her best to sound casual. Happy to remain in the conversation with Daelera, Palladium, now beagle shaped responded quite avidly.
”I tell you, it wasn’t easy. This girl of mine gets into the worst fixes sometimes, if it wasn’t for me, who knows what would have happened!” Mentally he felt a nudge, Aysel clearly disagreeing with the statement. Humbly, and perhaps more honestly, he continued. ”Honestly, it’s a wonder even to us. Since the first we ended up out in the streets, we’ve been moving from town to town. It keeps us going, that’s for sure.” Having no qualms with this, Aysel left him to the conversation. This was good for both of them, she thought. To communicate with someone other than each other? It was fantastic!
Surprisingly, she must’ve said something to have caught Lucan’s attention so well, for he lit up quite quickly upon mention of the North. Unable to find words, Aysel stammered, ” y-eah, least, that’s what I’ve been told. Haven’t ever met them though. But I know their somewhere. My mother was a Gyptian, see? She –“ Faltering, her words halted suddenly. Did he think poorly of Gyptians too? She could have very well messed up the entire meeting with that one word! Clasping her hands to her mouth, Aysel lowered her head, ashamed. Sensing his human’s feelings, Palladium went rigid, slipping into the form of a ferret his elongated body went stiff. Sympathy leaked from daemon to human.
’Maybe – maybe he en’t like that, Aysel. Don’t get worried over it yet. Maybe he’s different…' Just the same he was watching Daelera, should there be signs of animosity, it would come first in the shape she would take. As much as he would like to hope for the best, he was afterall getting along quite well with this new encounter, but if needs be… he would have to prepare to protect his human. Other children, those who were spoiled upon their parent’s laps and told of the shifty lives of Gyptians, often looked at Aysel as if she were the plague walking, some would even go so far as to throw something at her. Both daemon and girl looked to the boy and his daemon, praying he would not be the same as those others.

Lucan wasn't all that surprised that Aysel didn't have anything to do. There wasn't all that much to do when you're alone in the streets of Oxford. If you had friends with you things became a lot more fun. Even just walking around became more enjoyable when you weren't by yourself. Lucan wished he had friends to do things with. He wasn't completely alone, but meeting his current friends involved luck more than anything. He knew some qroups of kids had meeting places where they'd hang out. Then they'd go to the claybeds to battle other kids or to the market to steal from the stalls or just make a nuicance. Some kids had fun on thier own playing tricks on people, but Lucan wasn't one of these."I know what you mean. We don't usually have anything to do either."
Daelera was deeply concerned for the pair when she heard about how the pair had been living. It sounded like it could have gone quite badly for them. She didn't know what the 'fixes' they got in were like, but they must have been bad. Maybe these two didn't mind so much, maybe it was all just a bit of excitement for them. Lucan and Daelera had never been really adventurous, so it was hard for them to see how some people would consider danger as fun. "I bet moving around so much was hard for you." she said. She couldn't imagine how they had found transport, and walking would have been torturous. "Why didn't you just stay in one place?
Lucan was hoping that Aysel might be able to tell him a little about the North. He was interested in any news about places other than Brytain. Places his father might have visited. He wanted to go and see these places someday, but for now hearing about them was good enough. He was a bit disapointed when Aysel stopped suddenly. "What's wrong?" he asked, before realizing that he had done almost exactly the same thing a short while ago, just after mentioning his dad. She seemed to think she'd said something wrong, though. Lucan knew that a lot of people thought badly of Gyptians, and that the kids always ganged up against them whenever they stopped at Oxford. "I don't think there's anything wrong with Gyptians. They're probably nicer than some of the people round here." He reassured her. He was hoping she would continue telling him about her family in the North, but didn't want to ask directly. "So you've never met your family up there? How are you going to find them if you don't know where they live?" Lucan acked. He assumed she wanted to find them. After all, who would rather be on their own than with their family.
