The horse-drawn carriage came to a screeching halt when it finally arrived at Hangman's Wharf. Theodore woke with a start after nodding off several times during the journey. Jessica seemed to be sleeping soundly at this point and the blue tinge in her face was fading to a more healthy complexion. She was curled up in the seat opposite him while her otter dæmon remained under the watchful eyes of Isoba.
"We 'ave arrived, sir." The elderly driver announced, climbing down from the front of the carriage before opening the appropriate door. His gaze quickly swept across the figure of the sleeping girl before returning to the ground. "Thank you Maurice. But keep your eyes to yourself from now on." The young man replied almost contemptuously in a distant voice, his mind was elsewhere. Maurice nodded gravely before stepping aside, his canary dæmon poking her head out from the shelter his coat pocket.
Once again Theodore scooped up her limp body, climbing out of the carriage and into the awaiting street. It was near dawn when they reached the towering warehouse. Heading down King George's Steps, they finally reached a little green door. He was so familiar with the path now that he was confident that he could walk it blindfolded. Rapping on the door three times, a slit of metal opened to reveal a pair of emerald green eyes. "Password," an unenthusiastic voice requested. "Death to Dust." Theodore replied in a hushed tone.
The young man nursing a girl over his shoulder stepped inside, his cougar dæmon managing to slip through after him just before the door was snapped shut and bolted. There was a total of three other children trapped in the cellar of the warehouse. Two girls and one boy, none of their dæmons had settled yet. "...What's wrong with her, mister?" The boy with flaming red hair asked softly, rubbing his eyes as if he had just woken up from a long nap. "She's just tired, careful not to wake her." Theodore answered him with a warm smile. He gently set her down on a nearby stretcher bed, while Isoba followed suit.
Exchanging a few words with the serving woman, he told her to keep an eye on the children, but especially the older one. Theodore would still be somewhere in the vicinity but not near enough to watch the children on his own. "Please don't leave us again." One of the girls begged, clinging to his frock coat. While her squirrel dæmon ran around in circles panicking. "Come now, I've brought you a new playmate. I'll be back soon." The young man gestured toward the stretcher bed, the cougar at his side purring affectionately. The brown haired girl finally let go reluctantly and waved goodbye with a trembling bottom lip.
Theodore stepped out of the room into a glass paneled side-door and disappeared for the moment, leaving the children alone with the server woman. In a few minutes time she would be offering them hot chocolatl from a saucepan just as she always did. She was a middle aged woman with a large bosom and graying curly locks. A miserable looking bloodhound sat lazily at her feet.
