Carl Rojas' point of view

Carl was disappointed but not really surprised by the girl's answer. He hadn't seriously thought she had seen the person who had started the riot, but there had always been a small possibility. There was still the chance that one of the others in the cell blocks saw something useful. There was even the possibility that one of them was involved, possibly even started the riot. Most interrogations were more thorough and less polite than this one. They would find out who did this.

Noticing the girl's Dæmon change shape and moving to the comfort of his girl's hands, Carl reallied just how terrified she must be. He knew she wasn't at ease, even though he tried to assure her that nothing was going to happen to her. He looked slowly around the room. Not an ideal setting for a small child, especially one who had just witnessed a riot. A riot where people had died. People on both sides. His thoughts returned for a moment to the men he'd lost. The families he would have to inform. This would cause some serious waves. Carl wasn't sure who would come out on top. The girl's words brought his thoughts back to the present. "Don't worry, child." he said, making his voice as calming as possible. "We have no intention of keeping you here. I'm just waiting for news from one of the guards."

As if in answer to his words there was a knock on the door. Leona's head raised to focus on the source of the sound. Carl stood once again. He seemed to be in and out of his seat an awful lot more than usual. Leona followed him to the door, which the Riot police chief opened a small amount. It was the guard he had sent to look for the girl's parents. "There was no-one there by the names you gave me sir. None that I could find." was the only thing he said. "Return to your post then," Replied Carl. He was in a dilemma now. Should he just let the girl leave to find her parents herself? "Once she leaves she is no longer our concern. What could happen to her that would be worse than staying here? Leona spoke in his head. As we've seen today, people aren't safe. I don't know what trouble could could befall her. He responded. would it be worse than imprisoning her? Leona replied. That sealed the matter. Carl could see the fear in the girl's face, he had no desire to see it continue. He looked out of the slightly open door, spotting one of his men nursing a broken arm, he beckoned him over. Turning to the girl, he spoke. "We couldn't find your parents among the people waiting outside, but they may be waiting somewhere else. If you want you can go and find them. This man will show you to the door." Turning to the officer, he added "if you're able." He received a nod from the guard. And hopefully an agreement from the girl.
